North Yorkshire and East Coast (NYEC) Foundation School

NYEC Foundation School is part of the Yorkshire & the Humber Unit of Application, along with South Yorkshire and West Yorkshire Foundation Schools. This means that you apply to Yorkshire & the Humber as a whole and then rank the programes across the Schools according to preference - therefore you might rank NYEC programmes above those of West and South Yorkshire Schools, if NYEC was your preference.

NOTE: Remember that these numbers fluctuate from year to year, so looking at the statistics from just one year can be misleading.

The Application Process
Interviews
Reserve candidates only.
Appointment to F2 Programmes
Successful applicants are allocated to a one year programme with matching during the first year.
The second allocation is based on trainee preferences.  It is not based on application forms, scoring or ranking to determine the allocations.

Trainees must move Trust between the years, with one year spent in a teaching hospital, and one year spent in a DGH.  A very small number of applicants may move from York to Hull or vice versa (i.e. they may be allocated to a teaching hospital Trust for both years).  You can find more information about NYEC Foundation School's policies on F2 allocation here.
Linked Applications
Linked applications are honoured for allocation to programme at F1.  However, they are not honoured for F2 training.

The Programme
Posts Available
One year is spent in a teaching hospital (Hull or York), and one year in a DGH.   Rotations are 3 x 4 months.

There is plenty of information regarding the available posts in the NYEC Foundation School Guide (though this is a little out of date), and on each of the Trust pages, which were updated for 2012 entry: Scarborough and North East Yorkshire, North Lincolnshire and Goole, Hull and York.

You can also find a list of programmes with job descriptions for each region:
  • Hull and East Yorkshire
  • Grimsby and Scunthorpe
  • Scarborough
  • York
Teaching
Teaching is Trust-based with a weekly bleep-free teaching session in F1.   There is also a Professional Development Programme (5 days in F1, 6 in F2) held at the different Trusts, and every trainee is expected to attend each PDP at the different Trusts.
Study Leave
F1 and F2 study leave is used for the PDP days (see above).  However, Taster days are also encouraged as part of study leave in F2.
Training Options
Providing eligibility criteria are met, Less Than Full Time (LTFT) training may be undertaken through slot-sharing, reduced hours in a full-time post, or in a supernumerary post.

NYEC is happy to support trainees who wish to apply to spend F2 abroad, subject to demand.

Academic Foundation Posts
There are 62 posts available across Yorkshire & the Humber Deanery.  In the past, there have been 24 posts at NYEC in 8 different programmes, linked with Hull or York University.

There is a dedicated 4 month academic rotation during F2.  Job descriptions for the programmes offered in previous years can be downloaded from the sidebar of this page on the NYEC site.
